3 Mini Adventures to go on with your Mum
When you travel with your mum, it can change what you look for in your adventure.
Perhaps it means you look for trips with a little more comfort or luxury or perhaps your mum is more adventurous than you (!) and you’re looking for more hikes and activities. Either way, I’ve picked out three of my favourite places to explore with my mum – these are chilled adventures for a long weekend and perfect for a bit of laid back exploration.
Lisbon, Portugal
A short 2hr 40min journey from London Heathrow and you’ll find yourself in beautiful Lisbon. Capital of Portugal, Lisbon is a city-lover’s dream. I recommend hopping on the quaint yellow trams to take you through the cities historical centre, picking up a *daily* delicious Pastel de Nata (could live off of these) and visiting the historical Castelo de S. Jorge, but there’s plenty to see and do.
Stay:
54 Santa Catarina is located in downtown Lisbon in a building with more than 300 years of history and has been completely restored with fresh modern decor. It’s only a few hundred metres from the metro station and is very close to Bairro Alto – a really popular area with plenty of restaurants and bars to enjoy.
Eat:
Pastel De Nata (all day long…mmmm)
Do:
Visit Castelo de S.Jorge and take in the beautiful views, you can even try and spot the resident peacocks hanging around in the grounds.
Cornwall, UK
If you’re UK-based this is a great option for a relaxed and scenic trip away with your Mum (or any other parent!). Head over to Polperro for a cute artsy stay, or Falmouth for an eclectic and lively seaside escape. You can find more here on both Cornwall offers plenty of walks along the scenic coastline and as much cream tea as your heart desires.
Stay:
House on the Props in Polperro is a cute ocean-themed hide away or opt for Polurrian on the Lizard at Lizard Point for a grande hotel perched on the cliff-side with sweeping ocean views and a private beach (I spotted a seal here too!!)
Eat:
Pop into Coffee Cake Create (Polperro) and grab yourself a rocky road (OH MY GOD. I challenge you not to buy two), grab an ice cream at the cafe at Kynance Cove or if you decide on Falmouth enjoy cream tea at Fuel.
Do:
If in Polperro, take an art class and visit the cute coffee shops in the small village before milling around the art galleries and jewellery shops. If you head to Lizard Point, you MUST visit Kynance Cove *picks jaw up off the floor*. It is UNreal. You won’t believe it’s in England. Head here earlier in the day to avoid crowds.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Cool Copenhagen is a great choice for a long-weekend. Head over at Christmas for an idyllic Christmas market break, although it is a great city to visit all year round. Don’t miss Christiania, Copenhagen’s hippy neighbourhood with an eclectic mix of colourful art and interesting market.
Stay:
We stayed in a local AirBnb in the centre, but there’s loads to choose from. We stayed in a cute apartment near the metro and it was very easy to walk into town.
Eat:
Smørrebrød (open sandwiches) or Flæskesteg (roasted pork) are both traditional dishes alternatively if you visit around christmas time, head to the christmas markets at Nyhavn (Copenhagen’s pretty harbour) and grab yourself one of the waffles from the stalls.
Do:
If you are here at Christmas, you can’t miss the market at Tivoli Gardens. For a unique adventure, visit hippy town Christiania or explore the 13,000 plant species at the Botanical Gardens.
